FORMER Castleford Tiger Jamie Cording has joined the Giants with a view to securing a Super League contract.

The 19-year-old centre or back-row forward was in Castleford’s senior squad last season (he had their No25 Super League shirt), but spent much of the 2009 campaign on loan at Co-operative Championship club Gateshead Thunder.

The 6ft 2in, 14st Cording has subsequently been released by the Tigers, where he earned Yorkshire Academy honours two years ago, and has initially been signed on a one-year part-time contract.

He is, however, training full-time with the Giants and has already set sights on securing a Super League deal sooner rather than later.

“It’s a massive opportunity Huddersfield have given me and I intend to take it with both hands. I want to work hard in pre-season and prove I deserve a full-time contract,” he said.

“All the coaching staff are really switched on and everyone has made me feel very, very welcome at training.

“I’d love to play a couple of first-team games but at the moment I just want to get my head down and try to improve. I can play either back-row or centre, which I hope will be to my advantage, although I’d probably consider myself more a back-rower with speed and a decent pair of hands.”

Cording’s initial part-time deal was struck with Giants’ Head of Youth Performance Damian McGrath, who is looking forward to seeing how the youngster develops under head coach Nathan Brown’s tuition at the Giants.

“As a club, we like to give players an opportunity to show us their potential in a full-time environment,” said McGrath .

“We became aware of Jamie’s availability and it has given us the chance to take a closer look at a player who has all the attributes to prosper.

“We are looking forward to working with him over the off-season period.”
