- ST GEORGE Illawarra's Nathan Brown shapes as the man most likely to benefit from the coaching turmoil in the NRL after it emerged last night he had an escape clause in his contract with English Super League club Huddersfield.
Former Canberra halfback Todd Carney has signed a three-year deal with the Giants which also contains a get-out option after one season.
With several of the game's leading coaches under increasing pressure to keep their jobs beyond this season, clubs could look to Brown as a viable alternative.
Brown started his first-grade coaching career with the Dragons in 2003, but the club chose to sever ties with him in April and appointed Brisbane's Wayne Bennett to a three-year term from 2009.
Brown's career remained in limbo until July when he beat the Bulldogs' Steve Folkes and Wests Tigers assistant Royce Simmons for the coaching position at Huddersfield Giants.
The Dragons coach signed a three-year contract but a get-out clause was negotiated which would allow him to come home early if an opportunity arose in the NRL. Given the Dragons have finished the season impressively and could finish as high as fourth, Brown's stocks have risen dramatically.
Already there has been speculation about the future of Parramatta's Michael Hagan and Penrith's Matthew Elliott, given their clubs have limped out of finals contention.
Despite having another year to run on his contract, Elliott is understood to be under the most pressure to keep his job past this season.
Several coaches, including St Helens' Daniel Anderson, North Queensland assistant Ian Millward, Castleford's Terry Matterson and Folkes have been linked to Penrith.
Hagan has been told by club management that a decision on whether he is retained past 2009 will be made in the off season.
"(Eels chief executive) Denis (Fitzgerald) has pointed out the process and I'm pretty comfortable with that to be honest," Hagan said.
"No one wants to underperform but I think there have been some reasons for that without making excuses."
Newcastle coach Brian Smith is also off contract next season but has done a good job this year and has several triggers built into his deal the higher the Knights finish on the table. Brown's manager George Mimis last night refused to disclose any details of the contract and said his client was looking forward to his stint in England.
"Nathan is looking forward to taking up the challenge of helping Huddersfield get to the next level in Super League and the Challenge Cup," Mimis said.
"That's his immediate focus."
Carney had been the subject of a tug-of-war between Huddersfield and Wigan but The Australian reported last week the Giants had won the race for his services.
Carney was sacked by Canberra last month for refusing to accept the club's strict terms and conditions following a series of alcohol-related incidents.
To ensure that no other NRL club would sign the Country representative, he was deregistered for the 2009 season, forcing his manager to look for opportunities in England.
Negotiating an escape clause after only one season suggests Carney could be back in the NRL in 2010. And there would be no shortage of clubs queueing for his services.
Given the Dragons have lost Mark Gasnier and Jason Ryles, and the Bulldogs Sonny Bill Williams, they would be well placed to make an offer. link | |
