It is great to see that Greg Mcnally was back on the bench for Whitehaven after his injury scare against the Bulls, scored a couple of tries too, another one of our youngsters doing well.

He was the most talked about young player in the national leagues last year. Should develop into a fantastic player for us, him rejoining Whitehaven for a season was a masterstroke which should see him get regular game time and more experience. Was really delighted when we signed him, big future for this young man!

PostSubject: McNally   Greg Mcnally EmptyThu Apr 09, 2009 7:02 am

Quote :
Prolific Gregg McNally is on track to break Mick Pechey’s all-time tries-in-a-season record for Whitehaven – if he continues in his rich vein of form.

The goal-kicking half-back equalled Mick Nanyn’s point-in-a-match record, two weeks ago, landing 32 in the win at Featherstone.

And he now has centre Pechey’s landmark 34-try mark, set in 1994/95, in his sights.

Home-grown McNally, on loan at Haven from Super League Huddersfield Giants, has plundered 14 tries in eight appearances this term.

After eight games of his record-breaking season, Pechey had scored eight tries.

Haven’s unofficial statistician Brian Sharples, who compiled the comparisons, said: “Gregg’s a prolific scorer and I’ll be sorry to see him leave the club at the end of the season.

“Hopefully he goes on to prove himself in Super League.

“ These statistics are just a bit of fun, but they show what he’s capable of.

“Let’s persuade him to stay at Whitehaven and break all the club’s records!”

McNally has now played 17 games in total for Haven, and his record stands comparison with fellow Recre favourites, such as the club’s leading scrum-half of recent years, Sam Obst, who also claimed 14 in his first 17, and all-time great David Seeds, who crossed 11 times in 17. Obst went on to score 18 in 25 games in 2004.

When Nanyn reached a new best 398 points, also in 2004, he scored 102 points in his opening eight of the year. McNally has 112.

John McKeown, widely regarded as the club’s best ever goal kicker, booted an incredible 140 in 1956/57.

After his opening eight matches, the full-back had 28 to his credit, the same as McNally today.

The main obstacle to the 18-year-old’s record-breaking potential may be the fewer number of games he will play this season, compared to the former star names. He could, injuries and form permitting, feature in another 18 league games, taking his season’s tally to 26 matches, plus play-off games, which puts McKeown’s record out of reach.

In their record-busting campaigns, Pechey played in 32 games out of 38, Nanyn, 32 from 35, and McKeown 42 out of 44.

Mc Nally will obviously find it a lot more difficult in Super league, but to offset that he will be surrounded by far better players and will have the benefit of Super league coaching, training and fittnes programes, I have the feeling N Brown will know just how to get the best out of him, and he will hopefully go on to be a top player.

Does anyone on here know a lad called Nial Murphy, He is currently in trials with the Giants, he is 16 years old and has played for Yorkshire and various other representative games, I was playing golf with his dad last night, Tom used to play for Rochdale and he's as pleased as punch that his lad is doing so well, he says he is a Hooker and a real prospect, so maybe another one to keep an eye out for.

Went to watch My other half's Nephew play for Shaw Cross under 14's the other week. They had a full back called Curtis Norton, scored 4 tries, set up a few more and kicked goals from the touchline. Then To top it all off I found out he's on a Giants Scholarship scheme. He gets man of the match most weeks so i'm told. Looked awesome against players his own age. Reminded me of Henry Paul years ago. Another one for the future if he keeps his head down and doesn't stray with othr influences as he gets older.

He's down as been a scrum half but think he will end up a Stand Off or Loose Forward depending how he bulks up.

Another 2 tries and 3 goals, 21 tries for the season now.
